This statue of President Andrew Jackson is the first equestrian statue cast in the United States. Sculptor Clark Mills took seized cannons that General Jackson had captured from the British army in the Battle of New Orleans and melted them down to use in the casting of the statue that now rests in the center of haunted Lafayette Park. There are a variety of haunted accounts involving the boisterous Andrew Jackson within the White House. One of the most reported haunting in all of Washington D.C. is that of First Lady Dolley Madison. Her ghost has been encountered in at least three different areas around Lafayette Square including the White House Rose Garden, the Octagon House, and the Dolley Madison house depicted here. It is in this home that Dolley Madison spent her last years and it is on the porch that her ghost is most often witnessed.
