New Tour Explores Washington’s Haunted Past

Washington, D.C. -- Washington D.C. is best known for its democratic achievements, remarkable architecture and rich history, but behind its walls and within its corridors a darker past is hidden. For decades ghost stories involving some of Washington’s most famous and infamous figures have been circulated among the population. In the past these were tales mostly whispered about, but in more recent years mainstream media has begun to explore the Capital’s haunted sites through a variety of documentaries and television programs.

Due to the increased fascination with the city’s fascinating haunted history, there is now a nightly ghost tour scheduled to open this summer. D.C. Ghost Tours focused their research on Lafayette Park, which is where the tour takes place. “Although there are several ghost stories throughout the city, Lafayette Park was a logical site to conduct the tour. The history of the square is often tragic, violent, mysterious and involving historic figures. The buildings themselves are gorgeous, from the White House to the Hay-Adams Hotel to St. John’s Church, at night the Square is both chilling and beautiful,” says owner Kim Harris.

What could one expect from the tour? The storytelling guides dress in Victorian costumes and carry lit lanterns for the ambiance, and lead the groups throughout the area stopping at each site to reveal the ghost stories of each location. There are reported hauntings by presidents, soldiers, first ladies, war heroes and innocent victims searching for resolution. According to the owners, historic accuracy was their primary goal for the tour. They required at least three independent sources to include a ghost story on the route.

Are these building’s in the heart of the nation’s Capital really haunted? For most, seeing is believing. To see for yourself why Washington DC is considered one the most haunted cites in the United States call 888-844-3999 or visit www.dcghosttours.com .
